The town of Paonia welcomed newly elected Mayor Paige Smith who replaced outgoing Mayor Mary Bachran during the April 23 Paonia Board of Trustees meeting, reports the Delta County Independent. Kathy Swartz was sworn in for a full term after finishing former Trustee Thomas Markle's term. William Brunner and Walter Czeck were sworn in, replacing Morgan MacInnis and Dave Knutson.

Retired businessman Marc Katz bought a chunk of beat-up land on a mesa near the town of Durango, Colorado with the dream of building a bicycle park that might someday host an Olympic training ground. Nine years in the planning hasn't been easy, but what's now taking shape is a huge park that's building in room for many outdoor sports as well as mountain biking. Best of all, there's going to be space left for future, unknown needs.

Senator John Hickenlooper flanked by former state senator Don Corum held a listening session in Naturita last Friday regarding the proposed Dolores National Monument. According to reports from the Montrose Daily Press, the majority of attendees opposed further protections for the area stating concerns over water rights, recreation and future mining.
